SA Tourism appoints new head for West Africa region http://somesolutions.online/2018/11/12/sa-tourism-appoints-new-head-for-west-africa-region/ http://somesolutions.online/2018/11/12/sa-tourism-appoints-new-head-for-west-africa-region/#respond Mon, 12 Nov 2018 08:58:09 +0000 http://somesolutions.online/?p=6017 SA Tourism has appointed Thekiso Rakolojane to lead the organisation’s destination marketing efforts and to expand strategic business partnerships in Ghana and Nigeria.

Thekiso Rakolojane

“The West African markets are critical to us being able to achieve the goal of 5 million tourist arrivals by 2021 because the potential to grow the region is significant enough to make a big impact to South Africa’s tourism results,” says Sthembiso Dlamini, Chief Operating Officer at South African Tourism.

Growth in tourist arrivals means a better performing economy and increased job creation. In South Arica, 1.5 million jobs were supported by travel and tourism in 2017, which is 9.5% of the total employment in the country. The total contribution of travel and tourism to South Africa’s GDP was R412.5bn (8.9% of GDP) in 2017 and is forecast to rise by 2.9% in 2018.

Rakolojane takes over from Hloni Pitso who has since been appointed as head of SA Tourism’s South Europe Hub. Rakolojane brings 18 years’ worth brand management experience to his new role and will call upon his tourism industry knowledge to ensure market excellence.

Dlamini adds, “We are excited at the prospect of seeing Thekiso building on successes generated in these markets and enhancing stakeholder relationships to deliver on mutually beneficial business results.”

Talking about his focus in his new role, Rakolojane had this to say, “Addressing travel barrier concerns are important to our business goal and is the focus for South African officials in negotiating an ease on travel restrictions for Ghana and Nigeria.

I look forward to entrenching myself in new cultures, learning from our partners, and with my team, implementing innovative campaigns and effective business projects.”

Prior to being Hub Head, Rakolojane served as Regional Brand Manager looking after the Africa and Domestic Tourism markets at SA Tourism. Before that he was the Marketing and Communications Manager at the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa, a business unit operating within SA Tourism and is still the only recognised and globally credible quality assurance body for tourism products in South Africa that other African Tourism Boards are benchmarking themselves against.

Rakolojane admires the innate entrepreneurial spirit of Ghanaians and Nigerians and as an avid football lover, he will be based at the SA Tourism West Africa offices in Lagos, Nigeria, where football is life.

“We want to modernize the systems and ease visa burdens, we are working towards an e-visa regime” – Honourable Minister of Tourism – South Africa; Derek Andre Hanekom http://somesolutions.online/2018/06/13/we-want-to-modernize-the-systems-and-ease-visa-burdens-we-are-working-towards-an-e-visa-regime-honourable-minister-of-tourism-south-africa-derek-andre-hanekom/ http://somesolutions.online/2018/06/13/we-want-to-modernize-the-systems-and-ease-visa-burdens-we-are-working-towards-an-e-visa-regime-honourable-minister-of-tourism-south-africa-derek-andre-hanekom/#respond Wed, 13 Jun 2018 15:54:03 +0000 http://somesolutions.online/?p=5636 The United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) Commission for Africa held its 61st Regional Tourism Conference from 4th –  5th June 2018 in Abuja, capital City of Nigeria. It was an honour to welcome the Honourable Minister  of Tourism – South Africa;  Derek Andre Hanekom for his first time visit to Nigeria where he attended  the conference and joined over 20 Ministers and 500 delegates from 34 countries at the conference.

Following his introductory meeting with Nigerian trade and media at Indaba earlier in April 2018, the Minister alongside Consul General of SA in Lagos, Amb. Darkey Africa hosted Guests from the Media, Trade & Stakeholders in Lagos, Nigeria to an exclusive dinner in Lagos, Radisson – Ikeja on the 6th of June 2018.

South African Tourism Trade Relations Manager: West Africa, Mr Mohammed Tanko Kwajaffa who stood in for the Hub Head, Mr Hloni Pitso who was on study leave, welcomed & introduced the Minister, Consul General & invited guest.

The honorable tourism minister then opened up the floor to discussions by requesting an open and transparent dialogue on the tourism sector; with focus on the flow of traffic between West Africa and South Africa. Guests enjoyed a savoury South African inspired 3 course dinner, though the Minister himself insisted on a local Nigerian dish.  With the enjoyable experiences and stories shared across the night, it was unanimous that South Africa is the ultimate holiday destination, rich in taste, culture and experiences.

The Stakeholders and key Trade travel partners engaged with and discussed the re-occurring challenges of Visa processing as one of the key issues which hinders the over-all experience of  Nigerian’s travel to South Africa.

The Minister assured all present that much was being done to address the challenges that hinder the growth of tourism, he said:

“There is much being done to ease the South African Visa issues in Nigeria.  We are working towards eventually having an e-visa regime. We want to modernize the systems and ease the burdens. In the interim: We will be working on recognizing valid visa’s from other countries such as USA, U.K .etc. so that Nigerians with such Visa’s will be given leniency. Africa is indeed open for business, and offers a world of opportunity”

The Consular General re-affirmed the position on visas, he said We are aware of the Visa situation and are working towards resolving them with the colleagues from home affairs.”.  He further urged applicants  to submit applications on time and with sufficient supporting documents

The meeting played a key role in solidifying the unification of West Africa and South Africa, with much being done to strengthen areas of synergy between the two nations.

The Minister reassured all present that much was being done and procedures are already in place for a seamless visa process for West -Africa. He requested for the CG – Amb, Darkey Africa to kindly and immediately work on reviewing the visa processes and also specifically to immediately address the issues around visa durations for applicants, especially for repeat travelers.

The stakeholders thanked the CG for always having an open-door policy, and the Minister for the opportunity to collaborate on the advancement of tourism and relations between the two nations.

On closing, Minister Hanekom continues to promote unity and a two-way traffic of tourism between the two countries, he called for greater regional co-operation and for us all to work together to ensure ease of travel and the continued growth the tourism across the continent. He urges us to continue to spread the magic of Africa.

Join me on a journey to some very special places in our country, places that tell a remarkable story for the whole world.

Many international tourists, and some South Africans, would have experienced parts of the trip when they visited the tourist sites that relate the story of our first democratic President on Mandela Day. I hope that many more will have an opportunity to do so before Mandela Month draws to a close.

For those of us who cannot travel right now, let’s start our tour among the rolling hills around Qunu in the Eastern Cape. Scattered homesteads are sometimes clustered into little villages reached only by dusty, bumpy roads.

The cattle that you can see dotted around the landscape would have been tended by a young Rolihlala Mandela as they grazed all day long, nearly a century ago. There would have been a small school in this area, where a teacher bestowed the name “Nelson” upon a young man, little knowing that he was to become a universal symbol of the spirit of humanity and reconciliation among people.

Places like this are not just about picturesque hills and sparse dwellings. They reveal layer upon layer of our history and heritage. They reflect the thoughts and values of leaders like Nelson Mandela, and convey the collective consciousness of our people.

You can have an authentic interaction by living in private homes and local lodges in many rural communities like these. Here, you can gain first hand insight into how traditional beliefs and cultural practices intermingle with modern life. You can understand how the history and hardships of our people guide our aspirations to transform our economy and bring marginalised communities into the tourism mainstream.

This place was so important to former President Mandela that he chose to return here to retire, after leading a divided nation striving to reconcile itself, and serving our country as the world’s most revered statesman.

Let’s leave the quiet rural countryside of Qunu for now, we will return later.

Let’s head north to Gauteng, to Soweto in Johannesburg. It was here, in Vilakazi Street, that Nelson Mandela lived in a small red brick house typical of apartheid’s townships. Further down the road lived Desmond Tutu. Together with church colleagues and comrades in arms, Tutu and Mandela led the long struggle to tear down the policies that confined their people to live within their tiny boxes. Vilakazi Street became the heart of the struggle against apartheid.

Today, the precinct is bustling with restaurants and street vendors who depend on the busloads of visiting tourists for trade. It is the only street in the world that was once home to two Nobel Peace Prize laureates. Most visitors are international tourists, but more and more of our people are starting to experience the benefits of exploring their own country as our domestic marketing and promotional campaigns take root.

More tourist traffic through Vilakazi Street means better prospects for the economy of the precinct. Here, the layer of our historic social struggle is interweaved with many economic dimensions: the precinct supports jobs, small businesses and many entrepreneurs. Tourist guides, transport operators and vendors of memorabilia all benefit from tourism.

The former home of Nelson Mandela, and the Vilakazi Street precinct that developed around it, demonstrates the power of tourism to convert cultural heritage assets into tangible benefits for communities today.

We leave the city of Johannesburg and head for the quiet town of Howick in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands. It was here, along a winding back road, that Mandela was captured by security police, leading to the Treason Trial, his imprisonment on Robben Island, and the remarkable transformation in our country following his release.

The capture site is marked by an iconic sculpture which gives visitors a sense of the important historic event which changed the course of our history so dramatically. The tourism economy around the site is not as well developed as that of Vilakazi Street, but it has become a must-see site for passing tourists.

That single moment in time, when a policeman stopped a car driven by a man disguised as a chauffeur, was to become a defining moment in our history.

Standing here at the capture site, you feel the full significance of that momentous event along this very ordinary road.

From here, our journey follows Nelson Mandela to the prison cell he occupied for over two decades on Robben Island. A short ferry ride from Cape Town takes you to the island’s small harbour. A tour of the prison conveys the hardship its occupants were subjected to.

Standing in the cell that held Mandela captive is an extraordinary, life-changing experience.  You cannot stop thinking about how someone who was confined to the brutality of this place can emerge with such humanity, even towards his captors.

This experience forces all of us to look deep within ourselves, and to question our own sense of humanity towards others. It forces us to discover the Mandela within each of us, and to express the values he espoused in whatever ways we can.

The penultimate leg of our trip once again follows the footsteps of Nelson Mandela, this time from Robben Island to the Union Buildings in Pretoria, where the prisoner became the President.

On the front lawns, an imposing statue of a smiling Nelson Mandela stretches out his arms, protecting his people with the warmth it exudes. It is a fitting tribute to Mandela the man, the statesman, the father of our democratic nation.

From here, we will make one more stop before our journey ends. We return to a traditional family gravesite at Qunu, to Nelson Mandela’s final resting place. As his family and comrades gathered here to return his body to the very soil that sustained his early life, the nation resumed life without one of the greatest sons of Africa.

But the story is far from over: Nelson Mandela will be with us forever, through the political legacy that brought freedom and democracy for all in our country, and through the many sites that continue to reflect on momentous events in his life. From Qunu to Vilakazi Street, from Howick to Robben Island and Pretoria, and, finally back to Qunu, a journey through these sites brings our history and heritage to life.

I hope that many more South Africans will be able to make this remarkable journey, during Mandela Month and afterwards. And I wish that corporate South Africa, philanthropic foundations and others join hands and work together to make the trip possible for those who cannot afford to travel, especially our youth.

They will also return home with a renewed sense of what these sites mean for all of us in South Africa, and for humanity all around the world.

Experiencing the story of Nelson Mandela, and understanding the values and principles it reveals, makes each one of us a better person, and this is what makes the world a better place for all of us.

We end our journey as changed people, with a deeper understanding of ourselves and each other, fulfilling the ultimate purpose of tourism.

Johannesburg, South Africa: South Africa’s Police Minister, Fikile Mbalula, has announced a number of new policing and security measures in response to the recent incidents of crime in and around Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport.

This includes the increased vetting of airport employees, the permanent deployment of a senior ranking police officer at the airport, and the deployment of additional metro police officials, as well as members of crime intelligence, the detective service and the Hawks (the police unit responsible for combating, investigating and preventing national priority crimes such as serious organised crime).

After visiting South Africa’s busiest airport and meeting with airport management about the nature of the crimes being committed, Minister Mbalula said similar security measures to those that were in place around the 2010 Fifa World Cup would be implemented.

“There is a collective agreement that we need to explore the 2010 Soccer World Cup strategy, which was both efficient and effective. We further discussed and reached agreement that it is critical to ensure that as part of the long-term, sustainable security plan, all people that work at the airport need to be effectively vetted, so that we have a greater appreciation of who is working and/or based at the airport,” he said.

“On this basis, we jointly agreed that a more senior police officer with the rank of major general needs to be deployed to the airport and lead its policing operation. The major general will be based at the airport.”

He said the Executive Mayor of the Ekurhuleni Municipality, Mzwandile Masina, had undertaken to dispatch more Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department officers to assist in curbing crime at OR Tambo International Airport.

“There will be a joint deployment to the airport that will include crime intelligence, the Hawks and detectives. This team will operate out of an operations room where crime will be monitored on a daily basis at the airport and a report will be sent to me on a weekly basis, on the progress being made in this regard,” Minister Mbalula said.

He said that on 21 July 2017, he would meet with all the South African government agencies within the security cluster to flesh out a master plan to enhance the airport’s security.

“As we speak, the leadership of the South African Police Service (SAPS) is strengthening the plan of fighting crime at OR Tambo International Airport to ensure that we keep this national key point safe for all passengers and visitors to the airport and to our country. We therefore want to assure South Africans and our international guests that their safety is our number one priority.”

South African Tourism’s Chief Executive Officer, Sisa Ntshona, welcomed the plans to enhance police presence at the airport: “OR Tambo is one of the key entry points into South Africa and our continent, and is one of the busiest airports for domestic travelers as well.  The airport sees about 21 million passengers passing through every year. Because tourism is such an important driver of inclusive growth in our economy, we want all airline passengers to feel safe, secure and relaxed when they arrive, travel within and depart from South Africa. We have full confidence that the men and women of the SAPS will take the necessary steps to ensure that local and international travellers alike will have peace of mind when using the airport.”

South African tourism, has an incredible passion for innovation, culture and community, and we’re happy to help bring alive this movie alongside The Sun International who hosted the cast and crew to a variety of treatments Sun City has to offer.

One of Africa’s premier vacation destinations, Sun City in South Africa is internationally recognized for its superb resort, offering of hotels, attractions and world-class events. From adventure sports and safari options to a world-famous golf course and a wide variety of rides and games, Sun City provided the perfect background for the cast to enjoy the experience of a lifetime. Perhaps one of the stand out scenes from the movie is the Elephant Sanctuary scene which features the stars having an interactive elephant experience. Some of the breath-taking scenes in the movie to look out for are: Hartebeespoort Dam, which is an hour away from Sun City. Locally known as Harties, Hartebeespoort Dam is as famous for its sunset cruises as it is for the Lesedi Cultural village, a world heritage site which showcases the fascinating cultures and tradition of the people of South Africa.

The scenes in Johannesburg, which is only two hours away from Sun City, showcases the famous Sandton City and the world renowned Nelson Mandela Square. Soweto also made for a vibrant and colourful background to the movie, sitting thirty minutes south-west of Johnnesburg, scenes were captured from Hector Peterson Memorial and Vilakazi Street where both Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu lived.

South Africa continues to support increased economic cooperation between the Southern and Western African regions. This relationship is pivotal to maintaining an economically vibrant and resilient Africa that grows through partnerships between nations.

Mr Hloni Pitso regional manager for South African Tourism in West Africa, said of the partnership:

“South African tourism is delighted to partner with the AY on the production of ‘10 Days in Sun City’!

“We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Mr AY Makun on what promises to be yet another blockbuster production. AY is a passionate, determined, dedicated and hardworking individual. This time last year on one of South African Tourism’s influencer hosting trips AY saw opportunities as he travelled through out South Africa. He did not hesitate to seize the opportunity when he decided that this had to be a location for his next movie. A year later, we are here in Lagos for the movie premiere to watch the much anticipated movie ‘10 Days in Sun City’.

We saw this partnership as an opportunity not only to showcase South Africa as a holiday and business destination but also as a platform to encourage inter-Africa travel. It is important for Africans to explore their own land and discover its people. It is through travel and tourism that we can learn about each other’s historical and cultural heritages.

Tourism, entertainment, arts and culture are the key sectors that have the potential to unify this continent through people to people relations for the better advancement of Africa. We are seeing this more and more lately through music collaborations, comedy and now movies. I trust we will see more of such partnerships and collaborations.  Africa united, only greater things can come.”
